Lenny Williams CD - "It Must Be Love"
http://www.voicedistributions.com
His 2004 release My Way died an unfortunate death due to lack of proper record company marketing, so he's taken his career back in his own hands for It Must Be Love, released on his Lentom Records. And for soul music audiences who may be surprised that Williams is still recording, a bigger surprise may be just how good he and this album sound. Largely relying on a bluesy feel musically and lyrically, It Must Be Love covers familiar topics of love, cheating and break-up -- and does so very convincingly.
The disc opens with the excellent midtempo "Tuesday" (a great singles candidate) and continues through a generally strong series of tracks, sometimes bearing a classic soul sound ("Can't Nobody Do Me Like You Do," "Somebody Else"), other times feeling more contemporary ("I Be Missing You"). Williams even throws a couple well written adult contemporary ballads in the mix ("I Will Never Leave You" and "I Can't Say I Love Without You"), rounding out an impressive nighttime soul album that should please Williams' long time fans and should make him a few more. It Must Be Love is a great listen and a welcome return of a vastly underrated performer. Recommended.- By Chris Rizik of www.SoulTracks.com

The Supremes DVD - Reflections: Definitive Performances 1964-1969
http://www.voicedistributions.com
This is the very first time that a collection of performances by the Supremes have ever been issued on DVD. There are 16 full length songs plus 4 bonus clips including their first US top 30 hit "When The Love Light Starts Shining Through His Eyes". It also contains all 12 of their US number 1 hits. The performances are from the period 1963 - 1969 and are a mixture of TV appearances and live concert footage. Some of the live TV performances like "Come See About Me", Back In My Arms Again" & "I Hear A Symphony" have not been seen for over 40 years! The wonderful Funk Brothers are seen backing the girls on "Come See About Me" and Diana forgets the opening line to "I Hear A Symphony" but recovers without missing a beat. The clip for "Stop! In The Name Of Love" caused quite a storm back in 1965 as the girls are seen performing on a TV special with an interracial audience. The often overlooked song which broke their run of 5 numbers 1's "Nothing But Heartaches" is another rarity which is included. The dramatic "My World Is Empty Without You" is also from a TV special and shows the girls in the Hitsville studio known as the "Snakepit".

MEMPHIS: STAX MUSEUM HOSTs: "STILL LIFE IN SOUL" (11/6/2009 - 4/30/2010)
- Description:
- STAX MUSEUM OF AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC TO HOST
"STILL LIFE IN SOUL: Contemporary Music Photography by Jacob
Blickenstaff"
November 6, 2009 - April 30, 2010
MEMPHIS, TN - The Stax Museum of American Soul Music announces a new
exhibition, "STILL LIFE IN SOUL," opening November 6th, 2009. The
exhibit explores the current life, activity, and resurgence in
popularity of soul music through portrait, performance, and documentary
photography made since 2005 by music photographer Jacob Blickenstaff.
An opening reception and special Stax party will be held Friday,
November 6, 2009 at the Stax Museum (926 E. McLemore Avenue) from 7 - 10
p.m. There will be food, cocktails, former Stax artists, Jacob
Blickenstaff, and other special guests, and live music by the Stax Music
Academy. Admission is $20 general admission, FREE to Stax Museum
Members. Please visit www.staxmuseum.com for information on memberships.
Soul music was a nuanced, emotional, and energetic idiom that reached a
worldwide audience at its height in the 1960s but then virtually
disappeared by the end of the 1970s. After subsequent decades of disco,
hip-hop, rap, and modern R&B - much of which covered and sampled
original soul music classics from Stax Records and other labels - the
roots of authentic soul are sprouting again with revived careers of
veteran artists, dynamic new acts, successful concerts and festivals,
reissue projects, and soul-driven independent labels.
Also working to revive interest in soul music is the Concord Music
Group. Concord purchased Stax Records in 2004 and revived the label for
the first time in 30 years in 2007 during the yearlong 50th anniversary
of the label. Since that time it has re-mastered and reissued numerous
important records, signed new artists to Stax, and hosted the Stax 50th
Anniversary Concert that year in Memphis.
According to Blickenstaff, "This started out as a project about music
history, but I quickly found a community of music lovers, labels, bands,
festivals, and DJ's that were all coming together to support and create
great music with the older artists. This work focuses on the current
lives of the artists but the story is really about everyone working
together to make it happen. It's an amazing, passion-driven phenomenon
that soul music is growing again in the 21st century."
Artists represented in the 40 photos in the exhibit include Bettye
LaVette, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Lee Fields & the Expressions,
Barbara Lynn, Maxine Brown, Roscoe Robinson, Harvey Scales, Candi
Staton, Sir Lattimore Brown, Otis Clay, William Bell, Eddie Floyd, Skip
Pitts, Ben Cauley, Mighty Hannibal, John Gary Williams (of the Mad
Lads), and many others. The work chronicles performances at The
Ponderosa Stomp, Lincoln Center, Dig Deeper, and the Brooklyn Soul
Festival, as well as recording sessions at Daptone Studios. Performances
were backed by contemporary soul bands the Bo-Keys, The Sweet Divines,
and Eli Reed and the True Loves.
Stax Museum communications director Tim Sampson says, "As the only soul
music museum in the world, it's an essential part of our mission to
recognize these incredible artists and organizations that are dedicated
to authentic soul music who are bringing a whole new generation of fans
to the scene. It is also very much in keeping with the philosophy of our
Stax Music Academy, where we carry the Stax Records legacy of playing
real music into the future with a new generation."
Jacob responds, "I couldn't ask for a better home for this work. Their
commitment to honoring soul music's history while supporting its future
is a perfect parallel to the work in this exhibit."
Jacob Blickenstaff is a music photographer based in New York City. His
work has been published internationally in magazines and newspapers
including Rolling Stone, WIRE, Wax Poetics, No Depression, Los Angeles
Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Offbeat, Gambit Weekly, and Time Out New
York. He has also been an official photographer for the Ponderosa Stomp
since 2007. Additional music clients include Lincoln Center, NPR Music,
Daptone Records, and Proper American Records. This is the first major
exhibition of his photography.
An opening reception for the exhibit will be held November 6th at the
Stax Museum of American Soul Music, during which students of the Stax
Music Academy will perform for guests and former Stax Records artists.
For more information, images, or to schedule an interview with the
photographer, please contact Tim Sampson at 901-942-2535 or
